SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Jerry Brown says he sees little support in the Legislature for overhauling California’s landmark environmental protection law, a comment that surprised the leader of the state Senate.

Brown told California reporters who are traveling with him in China on Tuesday that interest in changing the California Environmental Quality Act is stronger among groups outside the state Capitol than among Democratic lawmakers, who control the Legislature.

He also said the law has support from key Democratic Party constituencies and that making changes would be difficult for the Legislature. The Sacramento Bee reported that Brown described his desired reforms as “not something you get done in a year.”

Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg has a bill to reform the law and said Tuesday that Brown’s comments took him by surprise.
